Power:
Shura is a woman of many talents. She is an Upper Level First Class Exorcist, one of the highest ranked in the True Cross Order and charged with banishing the demons which cross into their world from the Devil’s realm of Gehenna. Exorcists come in many flavors, their specialties called a ‘Meister’ and she carries three different titles:
Doctor – This title means that Shura is skilled in the use of herbs, as well as a few folk remedies, which she can use to help tend to the wounds inflicted upon others. While Shura does hold this status it is only briefly touched on and she hates to use it. She will only play doctor if there are no other choices.
Aria – Users with this title wield what are called ‘fatal verses’. They use the recitation of holy passages to exorcise the demons they face and in the creation of magic circles. The magic circles are barriers which can either keep the demonic forces outside or within the barrier, depending upon location.
In her trip to Kyoto she helps to recite the Buddhist works in order to try to exorcise a powerful demon called the Impure King. She also uses her chants to control the demon blood within Rin Okumura, using it only as a last resort to stop him from physically interfering during a fight with Bon and his father.
Tamer – Tamer Meisters have the ability to summon ‘familiars’, demons the Exorcists form contracts with, to help them in battle. Shura is able to summon low level demons called Naga, creatures who look like snakes. While Shura does not use them as outright weapons in battle she does use the Naga strategically. An example of this is seen when fire was needed to ignite and create an ash formed magic barrier to keep the demon Amaimon away. She had ordered her demons to wait until her call and ignite the flames when Amaimon arrived.
Knight – Holders of the Knight Meister are sword users and this is the title which Shura specializes above all others. Since she was a child Shura has wielded a magic sword, a long blade which holds demonic power within, and allows her to focus her energy into various attacks which are triggered by certain phrases she calls out in battle.
Some examples of the attacks she’s able to perform are:
“Snake Fang” – Using her sword, Shura sends out projectiles made of energy to attack her opponent.
“Emptiness” – Shura thrusts the back of her sword down, an invisible weight descending down with it to push against the enemy.
“Serpentine Zig-Zag” – Her sword extends into a lance. This requires her to spread some of her blood, feeding the demonic part of her sword. When used along with the ‘Snake Fang’ ability Shura is able to demolish a small building, cutting it in half.
When Shura is not battling her sword is stored in a hidden compartment elsewhere and that is accessible through the tattoo upon her chest. When she says the magic words of “Devour the eight princess, slay the serpent” the sword is called from this otherspace and it rises from her tattoo.
Personality:
”People may look frivolous on the outside but still be thoughtful on the inside.”
There’s more to a person than what the eye can see and the idiom is proved true with Shura Kirigakure. To the world she's a scantily clad clown with a penchant for drinking and goofing off when she should be working. At work she's a talented Exorcist and, when fighting, proves her intelligence and skill within moments. When other Exorcists meet her they often look surprised to find that she’s earned the rank of Upper Level First Class Exorcist and few could blame them. It’s difficult to take a woman seriously when she’s wearing only short shorts and a bikini top.
It also does not help that Shura moves through her surroundings in a way that says she doesn’t have a care in the world and approaches many with humor in her tone. When she isn’t working she’s found lazing about with a beer, her portable gaming system and often giggling wildly while she teases those nearby. The appearance she gives, with both her looks and her mannerisms, makes it difficult for anybody to see her as anything but a big breasted comedy act.
It’s this carefree attitude which brings out the frustration of many stoic types around her including Yukio Okumura, a boy she’s known since he was a child and she a teenager, and a boy who once announced that she pissed him off because she was obviously talented but refused to take anything seriously. However, like Shiro Fujimoto spoke in that scene, Shura has another layer to herself that others cannot see upon first glance.
Beneath the easygoing demeanor Shura does care about the things around her and there is a lot of thought to her actions. She even has a habit of expecting some of Mephisto’s strategy and movements against Rin Okumura, like when he manipulated Amaimon into attacking them during a camping trip, and so she prepared a magic barrier to protect the kids in her charge. When Rin was stifled by the stigma of hiding his flames from the world, a fear which got in the way of Rin learning how to use his powers, Shura arranged it so that they were discovered by the Vatican. That way the worst was over and she could train Rin properly.
Still, Shura doesn’t like over thinking things and would rather go with the flow in life, refusing to give in to the stress which could threaten to overwhelm her. When stressed she will allow herself only a few moments of thought, sometimes regret, before moving forward in life. A good example of this is when she is fighting Rin and reminiscing of a time when Fujimoto asked her to teach him how to use his sword. For the most part she maintains control of herself but, at one point in the battle, she remembers how pathetic Fujimoto had been when she last saw him and, while crossing swords with Rin, voices her cry that he was a coward. It is Rin’s defense of Fujimoto which endears him to her so she laughs and instantly becomes less serious.
Shura’s affection for others is another thing which she is determined to hide from others and is often a soft spot her, bringing out her worst side such as when Angel mentions her possibly caring about Fujimoto and she calls him ‘Baldy’ in upset response. It is also something which scares Shura. For so long Shura has created a barrier among herself and others, her teasing and flakey manner keeping any from wanting to get to know her further.
When Shura was young her clan, the Kirigakure all-female ninja clan, were slaughtered and she was left to survive on her own. During her fight with Rin she explained it as being a time when “every day was a struggle to survive” and she became a wild child, running with demons. It was Shiro Fujimoto who saved her and he came the first and last person she trusted and cared for. Fujimoto had taken her in but when the Okumura twins were born her care was pushed to the side. Shura still sees it as being tossed aside like trash.
Afterward Shura became nomadic, constantly moving without making human connections, and she dedicates herself to her work to avoid complications.
It is not until Mephisto calls her out on caring about the Okumura twins that Shura seems to notice the affection growing inside and it terrifies her. The other children in her ‘class’, the ones left in her charge, also have a small space in her heart but it is nowhere near the level which she holds for the Okumura twins.
The other side of Shura which many do not seem to think on is the side of her which is completely dedicated to her work as an Exorcist. She may treat missions as bothersome and she may complain about everything but, until her dispatch as a Senior Investigator and becoming entangled in the Okumura problem, The Knights of the True Cross Order was her life and still is. She considers herself a ‘dog of the order’, a term Shura used to explain why she couldn’t free Rin when he was imprisoned by the Order but her students could, and often has to prioritize her work for the order when she would rather be watching over the Okumura twins like when she was ordered to go on a secret mission to the Middle East even though True Cross Academy Town was suffering from a sudden influx of demons.
Ultimately, Shura is a caring mentor to Rin Okumura, an older sister figure to both of the Okumura twins, a wise teacher to the Esquires and a force to be reckoned with as an Exorcist. She loves to lay about, drink and enjoy all the luxuries life throws her way but is dependable and serious when the situation calls for it.
